Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

Malware

Malware, short for "malicious software," includes viruses and spyware to steal personal information, send spam, and commit fraud.

Phishing

Phishing is an attempt to obtain personal and/or financial information from an individual through the use of e-mail or pop-up boxes.

Spam

Spam is unsolicited commercial electronic communication, often delivered to a large number of individuals.

Spyware

Spyware is software installed on your computer without your consent to monitor or control your computer use.

  1. Protect your personal information. It's valuable.

  2. Know who you're dealing with.

  3. Use anti-virus software and a firewall, and update both regularly.

  4. Be sure to set up your operating system and Web browser software properly, and update them regularly.

  5. Make your passwords strong and keep them safe.

  6. Back up important files.

  7. Know who to contact if something goes wrong.
